The Ushakov medal has been a long time coming.

“We put a petition at 10 Downing Street in the ‘80s. In a few weeks’ time I’ll be 91. I wear these medals not because I want to look like a Christmas tree, but those who are not here – I wear it in their honour, because they gave their lives.”

A small number of veterans were given the Ushakov medal last summer by President Putin in Britain, and now 20 more have received the award.

A total of 3,000 British veterans will eventually be given the medal.
