National Historic Ships UK secures full grant for Heritage Lottery Fund skills training project:
National Historic Ships UK (NHS-UK) has received a confirmed grant of £261,100 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Skills for the Future Programme for the Shipshape Heritage Training Partnership project, it was announced today. This project will develop traditional skills and techniques in young people, focusing on the conservation, handling and maintenance of historic vessels at a time when these skills are in serious decline. Martyn Heighton, Director of NHS-UK, said: “I am delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us the go-ahead on this project. The funding will help to promote the traditional seamanship skills that are integral to the future of the UK’s operational historic vessels. It will also aid the development of specialist training across five regions via our Shipshape Network which we have set up to help support such initiatives. A skills mapping exercise, coupled with the development of an assessment framework in traditional seamanship skills, will ensure a legacy which will endure beyond the length of the 2½ years project”.
