The National Archives is the UK government's official archive of original documents and records, containing 1,000 years of history.
Around 20 fire fighters were earlier today at the scene in four engines.
A spokeswoman from the National Archives said everyone was evacuated from the building safely and no documents were damaged.
"The building remains closed to the public in order to recover the building," she added.

Touch wood all is OK, the building is also close to the River Thames, but hopefully will not get flooded ?
