Hope that a huge new war memorial could be built on the white cliffs of Dover in time for the centenary of the start of World War I. The National War Memorial Campaign has drawn up plans for a stone structure which would be carved with the names of all 1.7m dead recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register LINK: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-kent-18438245

July 31st 2013 marked a significant milestone in the development of the project. In a meeting with DDC planners, English Heritage stated they could find the project acceptable if a few minor amendments were made to the layout and furthermore it was not their role to dictate whether the project should go ahead. We are therefore now commencing site surveys in preparation for the planning application in a format agreed by both DDC and English Heritage. We now anticipate a foundation stone will be laid on 4th August 2014 with a full build out of the memorial (the visitors centre will be on a different track) to be completed by November 2018.
