New news and attempting to verify:
Apparently, The French government will hand out an award next year in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liberation of France.
All Allied veterans who took part in the D-Day events of June 6, 1944 and in the battles and military operations surrounding the landings and the campaign to liberate France between June 6 and August. 31, 1944 should be nominated for this award in recognition of outstanding achievements in military service during the historic time 70 years ago.
Will confirm all and more as news comes in.

Update: worth pursuing quickly: For British, Americans and other Commonwealth veterans who participated in the liberation of France please contact the Embassy of France in your country. Contact the Military or Defence Attache at the Embassy of France in your country and request information regarding Legion of Honour, the highest honour conferred by the Government of France.
Nominations must be submitted before December 31, 2013.

Still chasing news and updates, the French have done similar before: Apparently In 2004, the French awarded badges to the Veterans. Don Hunter an MNA Vice President got the first MN plaque in Normandy and was later awarded the Legion d’Honneur. He managed to get Winston Churchill grandson of Sir Winston Churchill, to unveil it at Arromanches in 2004 – the local Mayor was delighted and he could not do enough for the MN.
