THE last Scots-Italian survivor of a World War II shipping disaster has died at the age of 93. Rando Bertoia was among a large group of foreign nationals being transported from the UK to Canada on the Arandora Star when it was sunk by a German U-boat off Ireland in 1940. A total of 805 people, including one of Rando’s cousins, died. Rando ended up spending the rest of the war in Australia but returned to Glasgow after hostilities ended. He worked with his brother at the Victoria Watchmakers shop in Glasgow’s south side. He retired at the age of 85. LINK
