THIS ISLAND NATION Weekly Maritime Round-Up, September 23, 2013. One day on the steps of the European Court of Human Rights …… A view from a coastal region.... The quoted phrase, spoken by a fisherman on the banks of the Waterford Estuary who has seen a lot of traditional fishing rights wiped out has stuck in my mind. The full phrase he spoke is: “One day a man or woman will stand on the steps of the European Court of Human Rights and the removal of our traditional, indigenous, cultural human rights to live and fish in our villages will be heard.” A cry from the heart perhaps? Or an indication of the frustration and deep hurt which fishing communities feel from what is happening to them. EU policies and what at times has seemed to be the craven submission of the Irish government towards implementing every whim of Brussels bureaucrats, without considering the impact on traditional coastal communities, deserves to be challenged.
