Act of Remembrence St Mary Church, Cardiff 7th Sept 2013:St Mary the Virgin church, a parish church of 12th century Cardiff, had an open day and an Act of Remembrance on 7th September. The present building was opened in 1843 as a replacement for the original church (sited on the banks of the Taff in what is now Great Western Lane). The church was designed by a Liverpool architect, John Foster, in a striking Romanesque style, its exterior modelled on the south transept of Norwich Cathedral. The church features in the film Tiger Bay (1959), featuring John and Hayley Mills. The church contains a memorial window to the Arctic Convoys and there was an Act of Remembrance at the memorial window. LINK

ARCTIC ALLIED CONVOYS (1941-1945)Russian Embassy web site: For the gruelling years of the Second World War the Soviet, British, American, Canadian, South African and other military and merchant sailors ploughing the Arctic seas within the Convoys discharged their allied duty with honour. They endured the fire miles of the World War II, having supplied arms, ammunition, food and thousands of tons of other strategic cargo to Soviet Russia essential to our war effort. Originally convoys started to be used in the beginning of the WWII in 1939. The system of convoys provided for formation of large groups of merchant ships under the escort of military vessels for making sea trips. Such a system is organizationally complicated and hardly effective since speed of any convoy does not exceed speed of its slowest ship. LINK
