Merchant Navy Day:Today we mark the fourteenth Merchant Navy Day, set up in 2000 to remember Merchant Navy seafarers fallen in service and also to look ahead to the future of shipping in the UK. UK Chamber Director-General Brownrigg said: "On Merchant Navy Day we remember and pay tribute to seafarers who have lost their lives in service. More than 20,000 merchant seafarers lost their lives in World War Two alone, in service for their country’s survival and liberty. We owe them our gratitude. "Today we can also look ahead and celebrate the UK’s success as a maritime nation – as this year, the Merchant Navy Day Service on Sunday 8 September precedes the start of London International Shipping Week the next day - which will focus on London’s vital role in the positive development of global shipping and celebrate its contribution to UK economy and employment."
