Eddie Grenfell, the retired naval commander who fought for years to win recognition for his fellow heroes of the Arctic Convoys, has died.

The 93-year-old passed away at 8am today at his daughter’s Southsea home.

His death comes only three months after the veteran campaigner received his Arctic Star medal, following a long and often bitter fight for recognition which spanned nearly two decades.

Today, tributes poured in to the man who inspired thousands with his crusade.

Eddie won his last battle earlier this month when the Government announced that veterans of the Arctic Convoys who risked their lives to get supplies to Russia in the Second World War would finally been allowed to wear a medal of valour.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has made a U-turn over the Ushakov medal, which a grateful Russian nation wanted to award the veterans in May last year.

The war veteran who successfully campaigned for a medal to honour the Arctic Convoy heroes of the Second World War has died at the age of 93.

Commander Eddie Grenfell was the leading force in the 17-year fight to award a medal to 70,000 sailors whose service on what Churchill called ‘the worst journey in the world’ to Russia went unrecognised when the conflict ended.

His death comes just three months after the survivors were finally presented with their Arctic Star medals by David Cameron.

The Royal Navy veteran who spearheaded a 16-year campaign for the introduction of an Arctic Star medal has died. Commander Eddie Grenfell (ret’d) was at the forefront of a campaign to ensure the sailors and airmen who undertook the perilous Arctic Convoys during the Second World War were recognised.

A SCOTTISH veteran whose single-minded determination forced the UK government to create a medal for members of the Arctic convoys has died at his daughter’s home in Portsmouth aged 93.

Commander Eddie Grenfell, who was born in Peterhead and schooled in Montrose, has died three months after receiving the first Arctic Star, the medal created to recognise members of one of the most perilous campaigns of the Second World War.

Among the first to pay tribute to Cdr Grenfell was the head of the British armed forces, General Sir David Richards, who presented him with his medal in Portsmouth Guildhall on 19 March.
