HER NAME WAS SS: 1914 - 1918:Monument: Mercantile Marine Memorial - WW1 TOWER HILL Erection date: 12/12/1928 To the glory of God and to the honour of twelve thousand of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who have no grave but the sea. 1914 - 1918.George V should have been on duty to unveil this but he was seriously ill so Queen Mary took over, the first time she had played such a role. During the First World War the Merchant Service suffered heavy losses from German U-boat attacks. A policy of unrestricted warfare meant that merchant seafarers were also at risk of attack from enemy ships. In honour of the sacrifice made by merchant seafarers during the First World War, In 1928 King George V granted the title "Merchant Navy" to the service. The Prince of Wales was made the Master of the Merchant Navy, a role handed down to the present Sovereign.
