. Cardiff marked centenary of Terra Nova's return:100 years ago, the ship which carried Captain Scott and his crew on their fateful expedition to the South Pole returned to Cardiff. Scott had named Wales' capital as the Terra Nova's home port, because of the huge amount of support he had received in the city - in sponsorship and supplies. It left Cardiff Docks for the Antarctic on 15 June 1910. SS Terra Nova's active life continued, until it sunk in 1943 off the coast of Greenland, while working as a supply vessel.

The Captain Scott Society of Cardiff:On the 15th June 1910, The 'British Antarctic Expedition, 1910', led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott, CVO, RN, made its final departure from Cardiff, leaving the United Kingdom for the journey South in the expedition vessel, SS Terra Nova, RYS. The expedition ended tragically, creating one of the great legends of adventure and heroism of the 20th Century. The Captain Scott Society was established in Cardiff, UK, to commemorate the association of the City with Scott's Last Expedition and to encourage the Spirit of Adventure that he inspired. To further this objective, the Society makes two Awards annually LINK: www.captainscottsociety.com/

The return of Terra Nova:The return of a ship that carried Captain Robert Scott on his doomed expedition to the Antarctic a century ago was held in Cardiff. Scott and his party set off from the city aboard the Terra Nova in 1910 with the aim of becoming the first expedition to reach the South Pole. But he was beaten to it by a Norwegian team led by Roald Amundsen. The wreck of the SS Terra Nova discovered off Greenland last year by a team from a US research company.
The ship had a life after Scott's polar trek, sinking off Greenland's south coast in 1943.Capt Robert Scott: 100 years since Terra Nova's Cardiff return:LINK: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-south-east-wales-22894863
