President Vladimir Putin honors World War II veterans who took part in the Arctic convoys, 16 June, 2013: The UK government has announced that after over 65 years, hundreds of Arctic convoy veterans will finally receive a Russian bravery award - Ushakov medal. VoR’s Tim Walklate spoke to Phil Matthews, the Chair of the Soviet War Memorial . The Foreign Office has now overturned its earlier decision to block the Ushakov medal for the naval veterans, who helped transport cargo, food and weapons to Soviet forces based in the Russian cities of Murmansk and Archangel. Vladimir Putin formally awarded the first medals on Sunday.
