Ushakov medal, Still required: The sea was their life and often their death: “Many still want the Russian medal. The Russians have always been very grateful for what they did and they don’t see why they can’t have it.”
Waiting for new news.

The below is part of just one report, key elements appear to be the thoughts of many: Ivor Beaven, 89, of Cardiff, who was among those who ran the gauntlet of German U-Boats on the Arctic Convoys to deliver supplies to Russian allies, also suggested their recognition was overdue. He said: “It’s been a long time coming.”Mr Beaven maintains the Arctic Star is being offered to convoy veterans to deflect attention away from the Government’s refusal to allow them to accept an honour from the Russian Government. Unlike their counterparts in the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, British convoy veterans have not been allowed to accept the Russian Ushakov Medal Mr Beaven, who served as a stoker on the HMS Zambesi, said: “All he (Mr Cameron) is doing this for is to stop us from getting the Russian medal “The Russians want to give us a medal for bravery and courage and he says, ‘No, you’re not having it’.”
The Foreign Office said the new Arctic Star would make it more difficult for the convoy veterans to accept the Russian honour as servicemen already decorated by Britain can’t accept further awards from foreign powers for the same operation.Read more: Wales Online www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2013/02/26/world-war-ii-veterans-to-finally-receive-honours-for-their-heroism-91466-32885814/#ixzz2M9SgIGBMThe 5 year rule not mentioned, just we are giving you one, end of ? SIR – Now that the Government has recognised the bravery of the servicemen who served in the Arctic convoys with the award of the Arctic Star, will it not put the icing on the cake for the few survivors by relaxing its ban on the award of the Russian convoy (or Ushakov) medal? This has been offered by the Russian government and accepted by Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and American veterans of this theatre of war, but the Foreign and Commonwealth Office will not permit it for quite spurious reasons.
