War hero 'Stormy' dies after waiting decades for medal
Arctic veteran’s death leads to calls for ageing ex-servicemen to get delayed plaudits as soon as possible A war hero of a campaign described by Winston Churchill as the “worst journey in the world” has died – weeks before he was due to finally be honoured for his service. Arctic Convoy veteran Herbert William Lovegrove – known as “Stormy” – tragically died on Thursday aged 91 due to complications following a fall, just over two months before he was to receive a medal he waited decades for. Now his family has now warned that other ageing veterans should be awarded the long-awaited Arctic Star medals as soon as possible.
