Ushakov / South Queensferry.
USHAKOV: The case the government lackeys made before was along the lines of "you can't have a foreign medal if you got a UK one for the same thing." While they were pushing the view that the Atlantic Star covered the Arctic Convoys as well they were exposed to the argument that the Ushakov medal was not for the same thing.
Now that they have finally agreed to awarding the Arctic Star, the old response can be wheeled out again - only this time we don't have much of an argument against it. "Rules is rules" and all that!
The fact that it would cost the UK nothing to allow the award of the Ushakov medal and we have absolutely nothing to lose by allowing the Russians to give this bravery award to the remaining few men is too logical for the mentality of the people we are up against.
It might be worth a few more letters:
I would hope that during the Year of the Convoy No 10 could announce that the Ushakov medal can be accepted by our vetrans before it is to late. Palmed off for so long with the five year rule, now they shove out more and more they cannot recieve the Russian award as they will be receiving the Arctic Star. (A home award for the same campaign)
This is still total rubbish as Ushikov is an award for bravery and valour, rather than a campaign medal.
The few chaps that I am in contact with and others report in the press / media, that they will accept the Artic Star as they earned it, but would prefer instead of the begrudged, overdue, still not received. The at no cost, deserved, again, earned and warmly
