The association was formed on 10th March 1991 as the Hull MNA with the objective of bring together in a spirit of friendship and co-operation, all who sail or have sailed under articles of engagement in vessels of the British Merchant or Deep-sea Fishing fleets.
At the 2008 A.G.M. the association decided to insert Independent to its name to avoid any possible confusion as to its status, this was reinforced with the procurement of a new Association Standard.
